Songs of Glory for Unsung Hero

Let's Talk About Rob Lowe, Mug Shots and the Family

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign for Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Genworth. I attended a live event and received a promotional item to thank me for participating.

While this may all sound quite random and possibly criminal, relax. This is all totally legit and no heartthrobs were harmed during the writing of this article. Now, let's address the hot topics that so scandalously attracted your attention. Yes faves, I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with The Rob Lowe, Genworth spokesperson, affectionately referred to for the purpose of this article as#HeartthrobRob. Yes too my faves, I did have a mug shot taken, however Birch Coffee did not press charges, but they served a deliciously refreshing iced coffee and all of this excitement was part of the Genworth #LetsTalk Tour to get families talking about long term care.

The most fitting quote inciting the reason for initiating "the talk" is from none other than #HeartthrobRob, "The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining." Exactly! When faced with making the difficult and complex decisions relevant to the long term care that our aging family members will require as health concerns and time challenge longevity, it is in our best interests to be proactive. I have to admit, our family needs to have a time when we get together to discuss the concerns and options available for my mother, currently she continues to fulfill the demands of performing as a State Police Officer, meanwhile her diagnosis of Lupus lurks in the shadows of our minds. The health and well-being of my mother-in-law, living independently with the effects of aging becoming a greater reality with each visit for a doctor's appointment, make long term insurance planning another talk to schedule time to make happen. My takeaway from the Genworth #LetsTalk Tour is printed on the mega mug in our family's mug shot- "Nana & Grandma, Let's Talk!

Genworth enables families to set the wheels in motion for conversations discussing the long term care by offering a plan of action, their #LetsTalk Tips. Some of the suggested conversation starting strategies are:
  • Talk in Person
  • Be Open
  • Make It About Them
  • Have a Sense of Humor
  • Listen, Really Listen
  • Enjoy the Journey
As the #LetsTalk Tour has encouraged our family and many others as well to have this very important long term care conversation, serious consideration should be given to the increasing cost of living and the value of having insurance in place prior to actually needing those benefits. A great resource for the calculation of the estimated long term care expense is the Genworth Cost of Care Study available online and also as a mobile app. The challenge for families to accept aging, chronic illness and other disabilities can be emotionally draining as well as financially draining without advanced planning. Fix the roof. Today.

Experience the Genworth #LetsTalk Tour in New York City, NY, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, San Francisco, Ca and Dallas, TX for a mug shot in the photo booth, great coffee, a chance to tell your story and important information helpful for initiating "the talk" about long term care. I've done my research, taken notes and cleared my calendar, no excuses it's time to put a financial plan into action. "Nana & Grandma, Let's Talk!"
