Transform Your Garden Into a National Wildlife Foundation Certified Habitat

We did a thing. My green living heart is thrilled to share how National Wildlife Federation (NWF) certified our property as a Wildlife Habitat as our contribution to making a difference in the protection of wildlife. If you enjoy the wonders of the great outdoors,--backyards, urban gardens, school grounds, businesses, places of worship, campuses, parks, farms, zoos, and community landscapes can all be recognized as wildlife habitats through the program. We did it and are here is how you can easily transform your garden into your own NWF Certified Habitat.

Transform Your Garden Into a NWF Certified Habitat

Before we dig deeper (pun intended) into the process of qualifying a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the Garden for Wildlife program, I must admit that I barely qualify as an average gardener. I am a work in progress and our garden is as well. NWF celebrates the efforts of environmentalists of all skill levels working to creating gardenscapes nurturing habitats for birds, butterflies, bees, frogs, and other wildlife.

Each Certified Wildlife Habitat Garden provides a space that offers natural sources of food, water, cover, and places to raise young. These habitats are maintained in sustainable ways that incorporate native plants, conserve water, and do not rely upon the use of pesticides. These simple three steps will get your garden ready to become a NWF Certified Habitat-

1- Take the Certified Wildlife Habitat Assessment Quiz to understand how your landscape is currently supporting wildlife or download the checklist.

2- If your landscape qualifies for certification, go directly to the online application.

3- If your landscape is not quite complete and needs more guidance, learn more about habitat essentials or visit our resources section for tips, guides, and videos. These tools will help you create specific types of wildlife and incorporate these elements into garden beds, meadows, or container gardens.

Through the Garden for Wildlife initiative recognition of thousands of Certified Wildlife Habitat gardens across the United States to cultivating millions of acres supporting wildlife. We enjoy looking outdoors to see nature bloom, sustainably nurture wildlife, and do our part to help the environment. Taking care of our property to enhance it's appeal to wildlife gives us a rewarding, eco-friendly activity to enjoy together, while also reducing mowing, watering, and adding to the native beauty all around our home.

NWF’s Garden for Wildlife program encourages responsible gardening that helps pollinators and other wildlife thrive. It encourages planting with native species like milkweed and discouraging chemical pesticide use. With nearly 200,000 locations and growing, NWF’s Certified Wildlife Habitats and Community Wildlife Habitats recognize individuals, schools, groups and whole communities committed to providing habitat for wildlife, including pollinators. Each of the nearly 200,000 certified locations provides food, water, cover and places to raise young. This makes yards, schools, businesses, places of worship, campuses, parks, farms and other community-based landscapes into wildlife sanctuaries.
