Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial | Washington DC

Dedicated in 2011 as the first national memorial in the United States dedicated to an African-American citizen, the memorial was designed by Master Lei Yixin, a Chinese-American architect. Located along the Tidal Basin, adjacent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and in close proximity of the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the MLK, Jr. Memorial stands at 1964 Independence Avenue SW, a direct reference to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, greatly influenced by Dr. King's activism.

Impressively designed, the 30-foot statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. is diligently carved from the white granite, "Stone of Hope." Majestically standing with an expression of reflection and hope, this monumental symbol of our continued call for justice is a powerful reminder of Dr. King's legacy.

As you visit, you travel through the "Mountain of Despair,"  representing the struggles encountered during the Civil Rights Movement through the present day. The memorial features granite Inscription Wall engravings with excerpts from Dr. King's most powerful speeches and writings along with a cascading waterfall representative of the "River of Hope" flowing towards the Washington Monument.

The memorial is a free admission outdoor attraction, which remains open daily, 24 hours a day, attracting visitors from all around the world to reflect on his enduring message of justice, equality, and peaceful activism. Centered in close proximity to other historic memorials connects Dr. Martin Luther King to our nation's ongoing fight for freedom and equality for all.
